The Pertamina Energy Tower in Jakarta, Indonesia is the World’s first Energy-Positive Skyscraper that produces more energy that it uses. The Pertamina Energy Tower was built specifically to be as efficient as possible in terms of the amount of energy that is used in the normal operations of the facilities. It utilized a complex system of vertical turbines that are built into the upper floors of the tower to harness the wind for mechanical power which is converted by the turbines into electrical energy. Moreover, they are in the process of completing the underground geothermal energy system that will convert the stream that is present underground into electrical energy. Once both of these two projects are completed it is projected that not only will the tower be able to supply itself with electrical energy but it will able to power up to 4 city blocks with energy.
Based the success of this Energy-Positive structure we expect their to be many more projects that will be founded on the concept of being energy self sufficient. In terms of the construction industry this appears to be the next thread in advanced design work.
